St. Coleman's Cathedral, Cobh

I love that all of the street signs are in Irish (Gaelic) and English - thank god!!

St. Coleman's (rebuilt 1868 - 1915) is set high above the town and harbor and a visit requires travel up many steep and narrow streets - and I mean steep! The cathedral replaced the original church built in 1808. It is said to be the best example of the Gothic Revival style in Ireland.

The final climb!

There was a wedding taking place the day we were there - can you imagine? The interior was filled with ornate carvings and marble - Cobh, at the time, was very prosperous because of the immigration out of Ireland at the time, when over 5,000,000 people left for the US, Canada and Australia and many left from Queenstown.

The view across the street from the cathedral

Back down to town....
